Piano Theory An understanding of music theory enables piano students to see the harmonic patterns created by the composer, and as a result learn their parts more quickly and accurately. It also leads to a depth of understanding which is reflected in the emotional impact of the music. Since the keyboard is a very visual instrument, and since pianists already read in two clefs, pianists tend to learn music theory at a faster pace than other music students. This course is designed to make the most of those advantages. This class is taught by Dan Loschen , a pianist himself and head of the Music Theory department. This class meets 5:30-6:15 on Mondays.

Summer Jazz & Contemporary Music Session 1 June 22 – July 2, 2026 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. The tuition rate is $1,900. A deposit of $480 is required when your student's application is submitted in order to reserve their placement in this program. Session 2 July 6 – July 17, 2026 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. The tuition rate is $2,110. A deposit of $528 is required when your student's application is submitted in order to reserve their placement in this program. About Summer Jazz and Contemporary Music at RSC is a two-week immersion into jazz studies for students entering grades 3-12; however, younger students may be accepted on a case-by-case basis. Both students new to jazz/improvisation and more experienced players are welcome. Audition Information Summer Jazz and Contemporary Music will hold in-person auditions and accept video auditions to place students in the appropriate classes and combos. Audition requirements: 2-3 major scales of your choice A classical, jazz, or pop etude A jazz band piece or another piece student is currently working on Daily Combo Rehearsals Each student is placed in a combo of 4-7 players of similar age/ability. Combos work with a jazz faculty member and perform at the end of the session. Masterclasses Faculty perform and work with the students on jazz improvisation, technique, and ensemble interaction. Electives Students choose two electives that meet twice weekly. See below for more about the electives. Lunch & Recreation Daily lunch is provided. Use your interests, preferences, and style two create original and unique sounds not only to give your content a personal style, but to also avoid copyright infringement issues.New Orleans Brass BandThe New Orleans brass band is a horn driven, dance groove version of a jazz combo. Brass bands have always been a part of New Orleans culture, and can be heard throughout the city's countless parades. The second line style is at the core of the music, and traditionally features at least two drummers and a tuba as the rhythm section. The trumpet, trombone and sax take on melody, comping and improvising solos. In the RSC brass band, you will learn traditional New Orleans standards, as well as repertoire from current brass bands performing in New Orleans and around the world today. If you play drums, tuba, bass, or any horn/wind instrument, then there's a spot for you in this group. Come join the party!Rock LabThis class will provide an opportunity for students to develop the techniques (rhythmic, lead and otherwise) used in the many subgenres of rock, funk, blues, metal, americana, fusion, etc.) Concepts such as groove, odd time signatures, dynamics, timbre, and sound effects will be explored. Repertoire will be chosen through student and teacher input with a focus on challenging students to develop core musicianship. All levels welcome, experience with reading and improvisation would be helpful but not a requirement.Hand Drumming for Non-drummersExperience the joy and power of drumming. Learning to play world rhythms will improve your sense of pulse/time, deepen concentration, and improve coordination. Drumming is a great foundation for all musicians. In class, each student will be provided with a hand drum. Rhythms and concepts that are discussed will immediately be applied to the drum and used in an ensemble setting, allowing students to experience time keeping roles, counter rhythms and soloing. The primary goals for this class are:Explore rhythms from various cultures.Improve one's sense of time and internal pulse.Develop a rhythmic vocabulary for improvisation that can be transferred from the drum to the student’s primary instrument.Introduce students to polyrhythms and odd meters.Improvisation LabStudents will use basic scale and arpeggio knowledge to begin stress-free improvisation and music creation while building a basic musical vocabulary and acquiring ear training and music theory knowledge. Students will learn to use scales and key signatures to identify chord tones. They'll use this information to create basic phrases then use those phrases for improvisation and writing original compositions, building the class's repertoire. Students' repertoire will also grow through the introduction of blues songs and simple jazz standards. At the completion of the class, students will have built a strong starting musical repertoire and a confidence in simple improvisations and musical creation.

Rivers Youth Wind Ensembles About Rivers Youth Wind Ensembles (RYWE) Claire Nalven , Director The Rivers Youth Wind Ensembles program comprises two wind ensembles for students in grades 5-12. Each ensemble performs two concerts a year. Rehearsals take place on Mondays after school throughout the academic year. The ensemble is designed to provide musicians the opportunity to perform with like-minded advanced students. Students in this ensemble are comfortable playing several 2-octave scales and a chromatic scale on a large range on their instrument. Repertoire is at the Junior District level. The ensemble is designed to provide musicians the opportunity to perform the finest contemporary and traditional repertoire in an advanced wind ensemble setting. Students in this ensemble have developed their technique, possess a high degree of musicianship, and maintain a mature sound. Repertoire is at the Senior District level. History of RSC The Rivers School Conservatory was founded in 1975 when The New England Conservatory of Music closed all of the suburban branches of its preparatory school, including its Wellesley school. The displaced families from Wellesley, Weston, and Wayland convinced Ethel Bernard, one of the pioneers of the music school movement, to establish a music school committed to excellence in music education and performance. Ethel Bernard approached The Rivers School with the idea of founding a music school in the unoccupied former headmaster’s house on the campus of the then all-boys college preparatory school. First called The Music School at Rivers, The Rivers School Conservatory has been one of the nation’s leading community music conservatories ever since. The Rivers School Conservatory Concerto Competition Important Dates Sunday, November 30, 2025: RSC Concerto Competition Application Deadline Saturday, December 13, 2025: RSC Concerto Competition (9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.) Saturday, March 7, 2026: Winners’ Performance with Rivers Symphony Orchestra, Regis College 2025-2026 CONCERTO COMPETITION APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN About Open to all students who have been registered for the 2025-26 year and are taking at least 12 private lessons per semester at The Rivers School Conservatory. The length of lesson must be appropriate to the student’s level. Students are required to play one movement of a concerto of their choice from memory. Depending on timing, judges reserve the right to stop or skip to another selection of your selected movement. For more information, please contact the RSC Director before entering the competition. Students will compete in one of two divisions: The Junior Division is for students age 12 and under on the application deadline. The Senior Division is for students ages 13 and up on the same date. All competitors must be enrolled in their second consecutive semester or greater at RSC. Summers are not counted in this total. Beginner Musician Classes Suzuki (Violin, Viola, Cello, & Guitar) Students are instructed in the method developed by the late Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, based on the ease with which children learn their native language. The lessons focus on ear training, developing technique, and tone on the instrument before introducing the child to the complexities of note reading. Read More » Marimba Magic (ages 5 and up) The Marimba Magic program offers musicianship training to students as they play marimbas and drums in a group. Musical concepts are learned through creative explorations on the instruments, as well as through playing pieces from written music. ChamberMusicLab & Special Projects Fund in Honor of Bruce Coppock ChamberMusicLab is an intensive chamber music study course established by the innovative mind of the late Bruce Coppock, Founder and Chair of the chamber department from 2019-2022. The program involves a year-long commitment of weekly 3-hour rehearsals and coaching to learn and explore in-depth the experience of being in a chamber music group. Students participating in this program are deeply dedicated to music and describe it as an “unparalleled” musical experience. This fund directly supports the programming of ChamberMusicLab and its philosophy of teaching chamber music skills in great detail from the very beginning. RSC Innovation Fund This fund directly supports the development of innovative practices and programs that will increase access to a quality music education and enhance the reputation of RSC as a premier conservatory. These funds may support faculty or programs in pursuit of this goal, at the discretion of the director of The Rivers School Conservatory. Seminar on Contemporary Music Fund The Rivers School Conservatory Seminar on Contemporary Music for the Young was founded to address the need of young performers to hear, play, and learn the music of their time. Since 1978, the seminar has presented over 3,200 pieces, representing more than 1,920 composers and 720 premieres, including nearly 250 commissioned pieces and has become a hallmark program of RSC. This fund directly supports the vibrancy of the Seminar and its ability to commission distinguished composers of the 21st century to enrich the experience of RSC students and faculty. Rivers Symphony Orchestra Fund The Rivers Symphony Orchestra (RSO) was established in 1996 to promote opportunities for talented adult and advanced students from the community. The RSO is one of many examples of the way that The Rivers School Conservatory serves the greater community through its programming. This fund supports the resources needed to make the RSO an outstanding orchestra for adult students to continue experiencing the joys of music performance. Marimba Magic Fund The Marimba Magic Fund was established to support one of The Rivers School Conservatory’s key early music education programs. Marimba Magic introduces essential musicianship skills like rhythmic precision, creative exploration, scales, chords, and improvising, which can transfer to any instrument. This fund supports the resources needed to bring music to students ages five through twelve. Endowed Funds An endowed fund is an investment account established to permanently support a designated program. Each year, investment income from the fund supports the designated program. This differs from restricted funds because a gift to an endowed fund is invested rather than spent during the fiscal year. Endowed funds at RSC provide support for essential programs that contribute to a vibrant experience. Growing RSC endowment funds means providing more financial aid to deserving students, enriching the student experience through competitions, and offering scholarships for high-achieving musicians. Examples of RSC Endowed Funds are: A. Ramón Rivera Competition Fund The A. Ramón Rivera Piano Competition was donated to The Rivers School Conservatory in 1990 in honor of Mr. Rivera, Director Emeritus. The fund pays tribute to Mr. Rivera as an extraordinary teacher of our time and recognizes his superb teaching talent, uncompromising high standards for artistry in music and his love and care for every student. The scholarship prizes are awarded to outstanding students selected through the process of the A. Ramon Rivera Piano Competition. This scholarship encourages young pianists to continue in their search for excellence and hope that they too will inspire many students in years to come. David Beyer Piano Scholarship This fund was established in 2011 with a generous gift from Mr. and Mrs. James L. J. Nuzzo to honor the late David Beyer, an extraordinary pianist who taught at The Rivers School Conservatory for 35 years. This fund provides an annual scholarship to a Rivers School Conservatory piano student based on merit. Names of candidates will be solicited from the piano faculty in the spring and the recipient will be selected by the consensus of the RSC Director, Piano Department Chair, and his designated substitute. The winner will have his or her name engraved on a plaque placed in Bradley Hall. Deborah Hall Willis Music Endowment Fund Established in 2002, this fund supports programs that differentiates RSC from other music schools including the Contemporary Music Seminar, the Jazz Festival, and the Concerto Competition. Endowed Fund for Music Financial Aid Honoring David Tierney, RSC Director 1996-2018, The RSC Endowed Fund for Music Financial Aid recognizes and appreciates the impact that David has had as Director of The Rivers School Conservatory for 26 years. The fund enables music study for students from the surrounding communities who would like to take lessons, study theory, or join ensembles or orchestras at RSC. Students are offered financial aid based on documented financial need. The financial aid awards may be renewed annually until high school graduation or completion of music studies if the student remains in good standings and the family qualifies for aid. Fradette Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1998 from Mr. Michael J Fradette and Ms. Debra Fradette, parents of Nicole Fradette ‘97. This fund is meant to aid and encourage young flutists to pursue serious musical study at The Rivers Conservatory. The fund is named after Nicole Fradette ‘97 in recognition of her dedication, commitment, and accomplishments while a student at The Rivers School Conservatory. Magdalena Richter Scholarship Fund The fund was established in May 2012 with a generous gift from Mr. Steven J. Snider and Ms. Janice M. Snider. This fund continues the legacy of Magdalena Richter, an acclaimed violinist and devoted teacher who taught at The Rivers School Conservatory, by providing funds for a string competition and funds for a scholarship to a RSC violin student. Reid Jorgensen Percussion Department Chair Fund This fund was established in 2000 by a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Walter Reitz to recognize and honor The Rivers School Conservatory percussion department and faculty. Specifically, the late Reid Jorgensen for his 32 years of teaching at RSC and inspiration, sensitivity, support, commitment, and standard of excellence in his teaching of Andrew Reitz, a long-time student at The Rivers School Conservatory. This fund will provide the funding for the cost of the annual stipend for The Rivers School Conservatory Percussion Department Chair. Free Sunday Series Free Sunday Series at Rivers Join us in the intimate Rivera Recital Hall for FREE concerts on Sundays throughout the school year. These 90-minute concerts are free and open to the public and no tickets are required. Sunday, November 9, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. The Free Sunday Series presents a concert of music by the RSC Faculty. The program features an impressive lineup of faculty artists, including Jackson Carruthers (piano), MinKyung Oh (piano), Catherine O’Kelly (guitar), Ana Popa (piano), Eya Setsu (violin), and Taylor Stobinski (cello), along with guest artist Arielle Burke (flute). Special Events The Holiday Pops This festive, family-friendly event includes performances by Marimba Magic, Rivers Upper School Big Band, Rivers Youth Orchestra, and The Riverberations (Rivers A Cappella). In addition to live performances by Rivers and RSC students, the evening includes dinner, beer and wine, and a “Fund-a-Need” to benefit financial aid at RSC. Learn More » Seminar on Contemporary Music for the Young Each year, RSC presents a three-day festival of student recitals, guest performers, lectures, master classes, and presentations all focused on contemporary music. Works performed in the seminar must be composed within the last 25 years so the students and audiences hear, play, and learn the music of their time. Learn More » Rivers & RSC Jazz Festival The day-long annual Jazz Festival features an afternoon of performances by small ensembles directed by RSC faculty members as well as a concert featuring the Middle School Big Band, the Rivers Big Band, the Select Combos, and a featured artist. Diploma Program The Young Artist Certificate & Diploma Program at RSC is designed for talented young musicians seeking a more comprehensive musical education. Open to all students enrolled in private lessons, the program has specific artistic and technical requirements for each of its four levels. While the certificate requirements are challenging, the diploma requirements are even more rigorous. The requirements are listed in the links below. Each level typically takes three years to complete. Upon completion, students are awarded a certificate or diploma at RSC’s annual awards evening in early June.
